Most questions are covered below. If you don’t find an answer, please write — we’d rather hear from you than have you stuck.

Installing & updating

macOS says “Fin can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it”

This is Gatekeeper. Fin. is signed but not yet notarized via the App Store, so macOS Sequoia and Tahoe ask you to confirm the first launch manually.

  1. Drag Fin.app into Applications.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down. You’ll see “Fin was blocked…” with an Open Anyway button. Click it.
  4. Confirm with your password.

You only need to do this once. After that, Fin. launches normally.

How do I update Fin. to the latest version?

Fin. checks for updates automatically. When a new version is ready, you’ll see a small dialog — click Install Update and it relaunches into the new version.

You can also check manually any time: menubar icon → Check for Updates…

What are the system requirements?

macOS 13.0 (Ventura) or later. Fin. is a native Swift app, ~2 MB installed. Apple Silicon and Intel both work.

Using Fin.

How do I bring Fin. to the front from another app?

Press ⌃⌥⌘F (Control + Option + Command + F) from anywhere. The shortcut is fully customizable under Preferences → Shortcuts, or you can disable it.

How do I turn iCloud sync on or off?

Preferences → General → Sync with iCloud. Toggle it on to sync your lists across your Macs, off to keep everything local. Either works without an account — Fin. uses your existing iCloud sign-in.

If sync isn’t working, check that iCloud Drive is enabled in System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud on each Mac.

Can I use Fin. on a work Mac that blocks cloud tools?

Yes. Turn off Sync with iCloud in Preferences and Fin. stops touching iCloud entirely — all data stays on your Mac. There’s no account to register and no other network calls (other than the optional crash and update checks, which you can also disable).

How do I stop sending anonymous analytics?

Preferences → Privacy → Send anonymous analytics. Turn it off and the change takes effect immediately. See our privacy policy for exactly what we collect and why.

How do I uninstall Fin.?

Quit Fin. (menubar icon → Quit Fin.), then drag Fin.app from Applications to the Trash. To also remove your saved tasks and settings, run this in Terminal:

defaults delete in.nikhco.fin

If you had iCloud sync on, your data also lives in your iCloud Key-Value Store. It’s a few hundred KB of JSON and Apple cleans it up automatically when no devices reference it.

Reporting a bug

Email [email protected] with:

If Fin. crashed, an anonymous crash report has likely already reached us — but a quick note helps us connect it to a real situation.

Feature requests

We read every one. Fin. is deliberately small, so we say “not yet” more often than “yes”, but well-described requests at [email protected] shape the roadmap.
